Stephenson, a 6-2, 255-pound All-American at the University of Alabama, lived up to all expectations as a Dolphin. He was widely regarded as the best center in the NFL within a few years. From 1983 through 1987, he was named to the All-Pro and All-AFC teams five times in a row. Four years in a row, he was selected AFC or NFL Offensive Lineman of the Year in several major surveys. Stephenson was named to the Pro Bowl five times in a row, the first four times as a starter. He was unable to participate in the 1987 and 1988 games due to injuries. Dwight Stephenson, who was born in Murfreesboro, North Carolina on November 20, 1957, was a quiet, passionate, hard-working, and competitive man. He was a lightning-quick blocker with a powerful charge off the snap. He was the Dolphins' offensive captain, and his presence as the offensive line's anchor was a key role in the team's six-year streak of allowing the fewest quarterback sacks in the NFL. Stephenson spent much of his rookie season in 1980 on special teams, studying the fundamentals of pro football offensive line play. When regular center Mark Dennard was injured in the 11th game of the 1981 season, he got his first NFL start. Until the 1987 players' strike interrupted the record, Stephenson appeared in 107 consecutive games and started 80 of them. After the strike, he returned and started seven consecutive games before suffering a severe left knee injury. He attempted a return the next season but was forced to retire due to the injury's failure to respond. Stephenson started the AFC championship games in 1982, 1984, and 1985, as well as Super Bowls XVII and XIX.
