About David A. Moss
David A. Moss Biography
David Moss is the John G. McLean Professor of Business, Government, and the International Economy (BGIE) at Harvard Business School, where he teaches in the BGIE unit. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. and Yale University with a Ph.D. He worked at Abt Associates as a senior economist from 1992 to 1993. In July 1993, he became a member of the Harvard Business School faculty. Professor Moss's research focuses on economic policy, particularly the government's risk management function. He has written three books on these topics: Socializing Security: Progressive-Era Economists and the Origins of American Social Policy (Harvard University Press, 1996), which traces the intellectual and institutional origins of the American welfare state; When All Else Fails: Government as the Ultimate Risk Manager (Harvard University Press, 2002), which examines the government's pivotal role in risk management; and When All Else Fails: Government as the Ultimate Risk Manager (Harvard University Press). Moss has also co-edited two volumes on economic regulation and written several articles, book chapters, and case studies, mostly in the disciplines of institutional and policy history, financial history, political economics, and regulation. His study on financial regulation for the TARP Congressional Oversight Panel led to the publication of “An Ounce of Prevention: Financial Regulation, Moral Hazard, and the End of ‘Too Big to Fail'” (Harvard Magazine, Sept-Oct 2009). Professor Moss developed – and now teaches – a financial history course called "Creating the Modern Financial System" in the MBA program's second year. From the early eighteenth century through the present, the course traces key changes in financial markets, institutions, and tools. Professor Moss is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and the creator of the Tobin Project, a nonprofit research group. The Robert F. Greenhill Award, the Editors' Prize from the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, the Student Association Faculty Award for outstanding teaching at Harvard Business School (five times), and the American Risk and Insurance Association's Annual Kulp-Wright Book Award for the "most influential text published on the economics of risk management and insurance" are just a few of his recent accolades.
