Dara O'Briain Biography

Dara O'Briain is a stand-up comedian and television personality best known in the United Kingdom for presenting BBC 2's Mock the Week and in Ireland for hosting RTE 2's The Panel. He is one of the rare comedians who has hosted successful comedy shows in both the United Kingdom and his home Ireland at the same time. He began his television career as a children's broadcaster on RTÉ, while also doing his first stand-up shows on the Irish comedy circuit. After graduating from University College Dublin with a degree in Mathematical Physics. He spent three years as a broadcaster on the bilingual Irish and English) children's show Echo Island before breaking out as a team leader on the topical panel show Don't Feed The Gondolas. He departed the program in the middle of its fifth season to perform at the Adelaide and Melbourne comedy festivals. Dara later co-founded the television production firm Happy Endings Productions, well known in Ireland for the show The Panel. The program has become one of the most talked-about in Ireland, and it has been nominated twice for the IFTA Award for Best Entertainment Show (Irish Film and Television Award). His major break in British television came in 2003, when he took over as host of BBC2's Live Floor Show. This led to an appearance as a guest and, eventually, four appearances as a guest host on the popular news quiz show, Have I Got News For You. He recently finished hosting the third series of BBC television's comedy panel game Mock the Week, and his other notable television work includes two documentaries for the BBC re-creating the legendary British comedy novel Three Men in a Boat, in which he rowed down the Thames with Griff Rhys Jones and Rory McGrath, and the comedy interview programme Turn Back Time. In 2006, he embarked on his third and most extensive national tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. This featured 66 concerts around the UK, as well as 9 sold-out nights in Dublin. His second night in London's The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane was captured for his debut live DVD, which was released on November 13, 2006. Dara had a wonderful year in 2008, with a sold-out tour of over 90 shows in the UK and Ireland. The summer was spent filming another very successful season of Mock The Week for BBC, followed by another recording of Griff Rhys Jones and Rory McGrath's very popular Three Men in a Boat, this time sailing from Tower Bridge to the Isle of Wight. He released a book in 2009 and is now recording Mock The Week, followed by a new series of Three Men on a Boat.
