Dr. Carol Tavris has dedicated her career as a writer, teacher, and presenter to teaching the public about psychological science. Her recent book, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurting Acts (Harcourt, 2007), co-authored with Elliot Aronson, applies cognitive dissonance theory to a wide range of topics, including politics, conflicts of interest, memory (every day and recovered), the criminal justice system, police interrogation, the daycare sex-abuse epidemic, and faking it. She has given talks on self-justification, science and pseudoscience in psychology, gender and sexuality, critical thinking, and rage to students, psychologists, mediators, attorneys, judges, physicians, corporate leaders, and public audiences. Dr. Tavris has delivered several speeches and workshops to attorneys and judges on the differences between testimony based on sound psychological research and testimony based on pseudoscience and subjective clinical opinion in the legal arena. Dr. Tavris is a Charter Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 1, 8, and 35).
