Buika, who was born on the island of Majorca to African immigrant parents, has emerged as a real pioneer and a must-see performer among jazz fans, having been named one of NPR's 50 Great Voices. Buika's remarkable self-possession is explained by her obvious African roots and cosmopolitanism, which she cultivated in clubs in Spain and Americanized during a bizarre spell in Las Vegas. But, despite the fact that she sings almost entirely in Spanish, nothing can completely explain her capacity to connect — Buika is just one of those unique and beautiful one-listen singers. It's a characteristic that drew the attention of acclaimed filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, who cast her in The Skin I Live In, and jazz great Chick Corea, who invited Buika to perform as a special guest at the Blue Note in late 2011.
