Bruno Latour Biography

He is a French philosopher and science sociologist. He is particularly well-known for his contributions to Science and Technology Studies (STS). He is presently a Professor at Sciences Po Paris (2006), where he is the scientific director of the Sciences Po Medialab, after teaching at the École des Mines de Paris (Centre de Sociologie de l'Innovation) from 1982 to 2006. He is a Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and has taught at Harvard University. We Have Never Been Modern (1991; English version, 1993), Laboratory Life (with Steve Woolgar, 1979), and Science in Action are among Latour's best-known works (1987). Although Latour's investigations of scientific practice were once connected with social constructionist approaches to science philosophy, he has since deviated substantially. He is most recognized for rejecting the subjective/objective distinction and rethinking how people operate in practice. Latour, along with Michel Callon and John Law, is one of the primary developers of actor-network theory (ANT), a constructionist approach influenced by Harold Garfinkel's ethnomethodology, Algirdas Julius Greimas' generative semiotics, and (more recently) Émile Durkheim's rival Gabriel Tarde's sociology. For the year 2007, Latour's monographs placed him tenth among the most-cited book writers in the humanities and social sciences.
