Bob Willis Biography

Bob Willis is presently living in England, where he runs a training and consulting firm. Bob is the SMART Group's Technical Director and a member of the technical committee. Mr. Willis provides training and consulting in various areas of electronic manufacturing, despite being a specialist for firms utilizing Surface Mount Technology. Focusing on lead-free manufacturing over the past ten years has earned him the SOLDERTEC/Tin Technology Global Lead-Free Award for his contribution to the industry. He served as a Surface Mount Co-Ordinator for both the Marconi and GEC groups of enterprises with the GEC Technical Directorate, and before that he was a Senior Process Control Engineer with Marconi Communication Systems, where he had worked since his apprenticeship. Following his tenure at GEC, he went on to become the Technical Director of an electronics contract manufacturing firm, where he established a successful training and consulting section. He was involved in many parts of electronic production and assembly as a process engineer, including establishing up production processes and analyzing materials, as well as securing corporate clearance on a wide range of Marconi processes and products, including printed circuit board manufacturing. During my time at Marconi, I obtained knowledge of methodologies and equipment for environmental testing of components, printed boards, and assemblies, as well as developed an interest in a variety of defect analysis topics. He has been active in all elements of surface-mounted assembly, both at the production and quality levels, for the past 15 years, and has trained employees and other engineers in many facets of contemporary production during that period. Mr. Willis has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Japan, China, New Zealand, Australia, and the Far East in recent years, studying various aspects of electronics and teaching electronic assembly. The IMF (Institute of Metal Finishing) honored Mr. Willis with the Paul Eisler prize for the finest technical paper delivered at their technical programs. He's led SMT training programs for Texas Instruments and is now the course leader for Reflow and Wave Soldering Workshops in the UK. Mr. Willis is an IEE Registered Trainer who oversaw training courses for the PCIF, which was formerly one of Europe's leading printed circuit associations. Bob has performed workshops for all of the major organizations and exhibition organizers across the world and is recognized for being an engaging presenter who is the only one who uses unique process video clips to show each point stated during his workshops. Mr. Willis served as Chairman of the SMART Group, the European Surface Mount Trade Association, from 1990 to 1994, was elected Honorary President, and is now the SMART Group Technical Director. He also participates in BSI Standards Working Parties. He is a member of the Institute of Quality Assurance and the Society of Environmental Test Engineers, as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Circuit Technology and an NVQ Assessor. Bob Willis is a regular contributor to AMT Ireland, Asian Electronics Engineer, and Circuits Assembly in the United States. He's also in charge of creating each of the SMART Group Charity Technology reports, which the SMTA sells to earn money for good causes in Europe and America. Bob Willis recently assisted in the organization of the SMART Group-Lead Free Mission to Japan, which examined and reported on the present level of lead-free research and process implementation. In the United Kingdom, Bob was the project manager for the SMART Group PPM Monitoring Project, which was funded by the Department of Trade and Industry. He is presently the SMART Group's leadout Project Coordinator.
