Because of minuscule pores in the ultra-thin superconducting covering that enable certain magnetic fields to seep in, Almog's disc can be secured in place. Magnetic fields irritate the superconductor, so it traps them in weak spots. As a result, the microscopic holes serve as pins, keeping the disc in place in space. According to Almog, "we have accomplished what was previously considered to be impossible: manufacturing high-quality superconducting layers on sapphire wafers." Because the superconductor is of the greatest quality, it can lock in a micron-thick layer in space with sufficient power. But don't get your hopes up if you believe this will lead to a hoverboard or a flying automobile. A vehicle's whole surface would have to be covered in magnets, and it would have to be kept refrigerated with liquid nitrogen all the time. Part of the problem might be solved by developing a superconductor that functions at normal temperature, but such material has yet to be developed.
