About Andrew Nagorski

Andrew Nagorski Biography

Andrew Nagorski is the Vice President and Director of Public Policy at the EastWest Institute, an international affairs think tank with offices in New York, Brussels, and Moscow. He spent more than three decades as a foreign journalist and editor for Newsweek. Nagorski is headquartered in New York, but he travels frequently. Nagorski worked as a senior editor at Newsweek International from January 2000 to 2008, overseeing editorial collaboration between the parent magazine and its growing network of foreign language editions and other joint venture partners. Newsweek Arabic was established in 2000; Newsweek Polska was created in 2001 and has since become Poland's biggest newsmagazine; Newsweek Russia was introduced in 2004, and Newsweek Argentina was released in 2006. Nagorski continued to write for Newsweek International, writing reviews and opinions. The Overseas Press Club has recognized him three times for his reporting. Nagorski served as the Berlin bureau chief from 1996 to 1999, covering Germany's efforts to address the division's legacy, the immigration issue, and German-Jewish ties. Nagorski covered Central Europe from Berlin, leveraging his extensive expertise in the region as well as his fluency in Polish, Russian, and German. He was the Warsaw bureau head for Newsweek from 1990 to 1994, and he was the Moscow bureau chief for Newsweek twice, first in the early 1980s and then again from 1995 to 1996. He rose to worldwide prominence in 1982, when the Soviet authorities ejected him from the country due to his daring reporting. After two and a half years as Rome bureau head, he was promoted to Bonn bureau chief. Nagorski worked for Newsweek International in Hong Kong from 1978 to 1980, first as an Asian regional editor and later as a Hong Kong bureau head. He was Newsweek International's assistant managing editor from 1977 to 1978 after joining as an associate editor in 1973. Nagorski took a one-year leave of absence in 1988 to work at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC as a senior associate. He has also taught a course on international affairs writing as an adjunct professor at Bard College's Center for Globalization and International Affairs in recent years. Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland's Foreign Minister, awarded Nagorski with the newly formed Bene Merito medal in November 2009 for promoting Poland in the international arena, notably during the Solidarity era in the 1980s. Reluctant Farewell: An American Reporter's Candid Look Inside the Soviet Union, The Birth of Freedom: Shaping Lives and Societies in the New Eastern Europe, and The Greatest Battle: Stalin, Hitler, and the Desperate Struggle for Moscow that Changed the Course of World War II are among Nagorski's nonfiction works. The Greatest Battle, according to the Fresh York Review of Books, is "a new and thoroughly researched account of what had been a poorly recognized phase of the conflict." His debut novel, Last Stop Vienna, was a Washington Post bestseller about a young German who joins the early Nazi organization and is thrust into a confrontation with Hitler. Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power, his most recent book, was published in the spring of 2012. Before joining Newsweek, Nagorski taught social studies at Wayland High School in Massachusetts.
