Saskia Sassen concentrates her research and writing on topics like immigration, global cities (including cities and terrorism), new technologies, and changes within the liberal state as a result of the current transnational conditions. Sassen begins each of the three major projects that make up her 20 years of study with a thesis that challenges conventional wisdom by posing the unexpected and the paradoxical. "The Mobility of Labor and Capital" resulted from her first multi-year effort (Cambridge University Press 1988). Her thesis, which went against conventional wisdom that such investment would keep potential emigrants from leaving, is that foreign investment in less developed countries can increase the likelihood of emigration if it targets labor-intensive industries and destroys the traditional economy. Her second long-term research resulted in "The Global City," among other publications (Princeton University Press 1991; 2nd ed 2001). Her thesis, which went against prevailing beliefs at the time that the global economy transcended territory and its associated regulatory frameworks, is that the global economy is far from placeless and requires precise territorial insertions, with this need being most acute in the case of highly globalized and digitized sectors like finance. The honorable "Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Transnational Assemblages" resulted from her third multi-year study (Princeton University Press 2006). She argues that today's essential but imperfect globalization—from the economic to the subjective and cultural—occur mainly inside solid and central national settings and institutions. Since it wears national garb while denationalizing what was previously regarded as national, globalization becomes somewhat invisible. The publisher of her most recent work, "When Territory Leaves Current Framings," is Harvard University Press. Saskia Sassen has positions at Columbia University and editorial board memberships and advisory roles with several international organizations. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on Cities and the Council on International Relations. She has won numerous honors and awards, most recently a Doctor honoris causa from Delft University (Netherlands), the University of Notre Dame's first Distinguished Graduate School Alumnus Award, and being one of the four recipients of the inaugural University of Chicago Future Mentor Award, which was given to candidates in all doctoral programs. She has contributed to several publications, including The Guardian, The New York Times, Le Monde Diplomatique, the International Herald Tribune, Newsweek International, Vanguardia, Clarin, and the Financial Times.
