Brandon began Humans of New York in the summer of 2010. HONY resulted from an idea that he had to construct a photographic census of New York City. The thought was to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants, so he set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map. He worked for several months with this goal in mind. But somewhere along the way, HONY began to take on a much different character.

He started collecting quotes and short stories from the people he met, and began including these snippets alongside the photographs. Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the years has gained a large daily following. HONY provides a worldwide audience with glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.

Humans of New York has developed a large following through social media and has over 1.5 million followers on Facebook as of October 2013. Tumblr founder David Karp described Humans of New York as his favorite blog on Tumblr.

Stanton released the "Humans of New York" book, which is based on the eponymous photography blog, in 2013. The book reached the No. 1 position on The New York Times Non-Fiction Best Sellers. His next release, a children's book called "Little Humans," which is due for release next year.
