About Barbara Block

Barbara Block Biography

Barbara A. Block is a Ph.D. graduate of Duke University. Her study focuses on how giant pelagic fish make use of the open ocean. The goal of the research is to figure out how endothermic techniques evolved in tunas, billfishes, and sharks. Block and her colleagues study the molecular processes that underpin heat production and force production in skeletal muscle, as well as the evolution of endothermy and the physiological ecology of tunas and billfishes. The lab's research is multidisciplinary, incorporating physiology, ecology, and genetics, as well as oceanography and engineering. Professor Block and his colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have also created the Tuna Study and Conservation Center, a one-of-a-kind facility for tuna physiological research. They're using modern wildlife telemetry and molecular genetics tools to look at tuna and billfish migratory patterns, stock structure, and behavior in the short and long term. In international fisheries, the fish are heavily fished, and efficient management of existing biodiversity necessitates a thorough understanding of their biology and population dynamics. The Block lab conducts research at sea to better understand tuna and billfish migrations and physiological ecology, as well as to learn more about the selection benefit of endothermy in fish. Block and her colleagues are experimenting with pop-up satellite archival tags, a novel sort of remote telemetry gadget. The tags are basically computers that keep track of navigational data, body temperature, depth, and ambient temperature. The data collected with RFID tags will help us better understand the biology of these species and the structure of their populations. Marine researchers now have new instruments for investigating inaccessible marine animals because to the effective adoption of revolutionary satellite archival tag technology. Professor Block has received the National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award as well as a MacArthur Prize Fellowship.
