About Austin Stevens

Austin Stevens Biography

Austin Stevens is a herpetologist, wildlife photographer, filmmaker, and author from South Africa who is most known for hosting a series of snake films, the most famous of which being Austin Stevens: Most Dangerous. Austin Stevens was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and began his fascination with snakes when he was 12 years old. His reptile collection comprised some of the world's most unusual and poisonous species by the time he graduated from high school. Stevens' mother lost a lung in a car accident when he was a child, was unwell all of his life, and died while he was in his 30s; his father had a tiny typewriter repair shop. His adventurous spirit may be traced back to his grandpa, Austin James Stevens, from Bristol, England, who was a co-founder of the AJS Motorbike Corporation and subsequently carried the boat to Africa. Stevens became actively involved with motorbikes and gangs, spending years as a self-described loose cannon. After a near-fatal accident during a race in 1974, he gave up motorbikes. He claims that being given a position at the Transvaal Snake Park outside Johannesburg, which revived his enthusiasm for animals, was what rescued him. He spent six years as the reptile curator at the Transvaal Snake Park, where he received hands-on instruction to become a fully trained herpetologist. After leaving the Transvaal Snake Park, he went to Germany to work as a Curator of Herpetology at the Nordharzer Schlangenfarm, a park he helped develop and open before returning to Africa to work as a Curator of Reptiles at the Hartebeespoort Dam Snake and Animal Park. Austin established a record by spending 107 days and nights in a cage with 36 of Africa's most poisonous and deadliest snakes in order to raise cash and public awareness about the situation of African gorillas. He was bitten by a cobra on the 96th day, but much to the surprise of many, he refused to leave the cage and was treated there instead. Despite being unwell from the snakebite, he finished the 107-day challenge and set a new Guinness World Record (documented in the Guinness Book of Animal Records). Though there have been a lot of attempts at comparable records (records attempted with different conditions and snakes to Stevens' record), his world record has never been replicated or beaten. Austin wrote a book called Snakes in My Bed based on his experiences. Austin then relocated to Namibia, where he pursued a career in wildlife photography and filmmaking. Austin's herpetology profession now involves hosting a series of TV shows about reptiles and other exotic creatures. Austin Stevens: Snakemaster, also known as Austin Stevens: Most Dangerous on Animal Planet and Austin Stevens Adventures on Animal Planet and five in the United Kingdom, is the primary show. In the fall of 2009, his show was shown in high definition on HDNet in the United States under the title Austin Stevens Adventures. Noir Publishing released his most recent novel, The Last Snake Man, in the United Kingdom. Stevens claims he has no professional photographic experience and does not have a huge collection of camera equipment since he prefers to keep his kit small. Since the 1970s, he has been a "Canon enthusiast" who has used numerous kinds of cameras. He is shown utilizing the Canon EOS 50D and then the Canon 300D in several of the early episodes. He utilizes the Samsung GX-10 in the second season, which he pairs with both Samsung and Pentax lenses. For general usage, he also uses a Samsung Pro815 and an unidentified Sony Cybershot model.
