CNN’s senior political correspondentm weekend anchor and top journalism speaker, Abby Phillip, shared her insights on politics at Tufts University during the 15th Edward R. Murrow Forum on Issues in Journalism on April 3. The event was sponsored by Tisch College’s Solomont Speaker Series and was the first in-person Murrow Forum in four years.
During the conversation, Tufts trustee Neil Shapiro asked Phillip to share her thoughts on former President Trump’s criminal indictment and its implications for the media industry. Phillip commented that Trump’s indictment was “unprecedented and historic” and a “wake-up call” for the country, as no other president has ever gotten to the point of facing criminal charges. She expressed concern over the repetition of lies in politics, which she found “mind-boggling” during her coverage of the Trump administration.

Phillip also spoke about her experiences as a White House correspondent during the Obama and Trump administrations. While the Obama administration was “very traditional” and “well preserved and protected,” the Trump administration was “incredibly abnormal in every possible way.” She noted that reporters like herself had to tell some of Trump’s White House employees how things would work due to a lack of transition training.
When asked about the recent changes to CNN’s leadership, Phillip commented that there have been changes in ownership and leadership, and “a lot of things are changing.” However, she added that her role as a journalist has not changed and that she believes there will always be a role for legacy media outlets like CNN and The New York Times.
Phillip also spoke directly to young journalists about the importance of building thick skin and handling criticism in the media industry. She encouraged them to internalize criticism and make changes to improve their writing and reporting skills.
In summary, Abby Phillip’s insights on politics and her experiences as a White House correspondent offered valuable perspectives for aspiring journalists and professionals in the industry. Sher certainly showed why she is a top journalism speaker and her comments on the role of legacy media outlets and the need for thick skin and constructive criticism provide helpful advice for those seeking to improve their skills and succeed in the field.
