Tom Inglesby Biography

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Health Security is directed by Dr. Inglesby. The mission of the Center for Health Security is to safeguard people's health against the effects of epidemics and natural calamities. Dr. Inglesby holds a dual appointment at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is also a professor in the department of environmental health and engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. International acclaim has been accorded to Dr. Inglesby's work in the areas of public health readiness, pandemic and emerging infectious disease, and biological threat prevention and response. From 2010 to 2019, he served as the Board of Scientific Counselors' Chair for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response. He presided over the National Advisory Council for the National Health Security Preparedness Index of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He was a member of the CDC Director's External Laboratory Safety Workgroup, which investigated the biosafety procedures used by the CDC, the NIH, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the wake of high-profile laboratory mishaps at federal agencies. On behalf of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, he participated in the Working Group in 2016 that evaluated US biosecurity (PCAST). He has worked as an advisor to NIH, BARDA, DHS, and DARPA in addition to serving on committees for the Defense Science Board, National Academies of Sciences, and Institute of Medicine. Dr. Inglesby has written or collaborated on more than 140 works, including peer-reviewed studies, reports, and comments on topics like health security, disaster preparedness, and preparing for epidemics and biological threats. He helped create the peer-reviewed journal Health Security in 2003, where he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief. The JAMA book Bioterrorism: Guidelines for Medical and Public Health Management was edited in part by him. At the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also held the position of Assistant Chief of Service from 1996–1997, Dr. Inglesby finished his studies in internal medicine and infectious diseases. Dr. Inglesby obtained his BA from Georgetown University and his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He meets patients once a week in a clinic for infectious diseases.
