Timnit Gebru Biography

Timnit Gebru recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Fairness Accountability Transparency and Ethics (FATE) group at Microsoft Research New York before joining the Ethical AI team at Google. Prior to that, she was a Ph.D. candidate researching computer vision under Fei-Fei Li at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. She focuses on computer vision issues that occur as a result, such as fine-grained picture recognition, scalable annotation of images, and domain adaptation. Her primary research interest is in data mining large-scale publically available photos to acquire social insight. She is actively researching techniques for auditing and reducing bias in sociotechnical systems, as well as the ethical issues that underlie all data mining projects. Her work has lately been featured by publications including MIT Tech Review and The New York Times. She aims to improve diversity in the industry and lessen the harmful effects of racial prejudice in the training data used for human-centric machine learning models as a co-founder of the organization Black in AI.
