Mutale Nkonde Biography

Mutale Nkonde is the founder of AI for the People, a non-profit communications organization that combines journalism, the arts, and culture to promote racial equity in the digital industry. Her team discovered a misinformation network targeting Black voters in the Philadelphia news ecosystem during the 2020 presidential election and reported the results in the Harvard Kennedy School's Misinformation Review. In cooperation with Amnesty International, AI for the People began its biometric justice vertical in 2021 by making a film advocating a ban on face recognition in New York State. Nkonde is a well-known media pundit who works to provide a safe environment for Black engineers who feel underrepresented in the digital industry. She previously led a team that proposed the Algorithm and Deepfakes Accountability Acts, as well as the No Biometric Barriers Act, to the United States House of Representatives in 2019. She began her career as a broadcast journalist before moving into the digital industry. She now serves on the Tik Tok Content Moderation Advisory Board, advises McGill University's Center for Media, Technology, and Democracy, and is a member of the UN 3C Table on AI.
