About Tim Shriver
Tim Shriver Biography
American disability rights advocate, director of movies, and former teacher Tim Shriver has served as Special Olympics' chairman since 1996. Being the third child of Sargent Shriver, who created the Peace Corps, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics, he is a member of the Kennedy family. Timothy Shriver was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the creator of Special Olympics, and Sargent Shriver, a former American ambassador to France and vice presidential candidate for the Democratic Party in 1972. Along with his siblings Bobby Shriver, Maria Shriver, Mark Shriver, and Anthony Shriver, he was brought up as a Catholic. Through his mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a younger sister of President John F. Kennedy, he is a member of the Kennedy family. Shriver received his education at St. Albans School. He graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1981, The Catholic University of America awarded him an M.A. in religion and religious education in 1988, and the University of Connecticut awarded him a Ph.D. in education in 1996. Shriver worked as a teacher for 15 years in public schools, including some time in special education. He worked as a high school teacher in the New Haven, Connecticut public school system and as a teacher and counselor for the Upward Bound program for underprivileged kids at the University of Connecticut. He was accepted as a Fellow at the Yale Child Study Center's School Development Program. He had a key role in founding the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning at the University of Illinois at Chicago as well as the Social Development Project at the public schools in New Haven, Connecticut. He worked as the show's executive producer, a producer or co-producer on Amistad, the Disney film The Loretta Claiborne Story, and shows for the American Broadcasting Company, the National Broadcasting Corporation, and the TNT cable channel. He was also a producer or co-producer on The Ringer. He presently serves on the board of Malaria No More, a nonprofit organization with headquarters in New York with a mission to eradicate all malaria-related fatalities. Malaria No More was founded at the 2006 White House Summit. He is now the Special Olympics Chairman. In order to promote greater acceptance and inclusion for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a condition that affected their late aunt Rosemary Kennedy, Timothy and his brother Anthony Shriver recently partnered with the Special Olympics and Best Buddies, an organization that Anthony Shriver founded. Since the organization's inception, Shriver has served on the board of directors of The Future Project, a nationwide project aimed at enabling young people to find their passion and make a difference in the world. Additionally, he has authored a book titled Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most, which was released by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux (2014). Timothy Shriver, the chairman of Special Olympics, has fought against prejudice and mockery of athletes who compete in the games. He has especially advocated against the usage of "the R word," which he refers to as retarded, contending that it is extremely hurtful and that those with intellectual impairments should be recognized and treated equally with everyone else.
