Tim King Biography

Tim King is the founder, president, and CEO of Urban Prep Academies, a nonprofit group that runs a network of public high schools for boys that are college-prep in Chicago, including the first all-male charter high school in the country. It also runs programs that are related to fostering college success. All African-American male graduates of Urban Prep, the majority of whom are from low-income homes, have received admission to four-year schools and institutions. Tim has written for the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the Huffington Post in addition to being an adjunct instructor at Northwestern University. Tim was honored by Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for his work with youth and named "Person of the Week" by ABC World News, "Hero of the Year," and to Ebony Magazine's "Power 100" list. He has also appeared on "Good Morning America," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and The Moth/USA Networks' Characters Unite series. Tim has earned a doctorate honoris causa from the Adler School, done postgraduate studies in Kenya and Italy, and graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in foreign service and a law degree. When the former student's mother passed away, Tim took over the guardianship of the orphaned boy in 1996. That kid, who was formerly destitute, recently received their college diploma. Tim's finest accomplishment is having a good influence on this young man's life.
