Tim Birkhead Biography

The professor of behavior and evolution at the University of Sheffield is Tim Birkhead. His studies on sperm competition and promiscuity in birds significantly altered our knowledge of how birds mate. He teaches undergraduate courses in the history and philosophy of science as well as animal behavior. On Skomer Island in Wales, Birkhead has continued his extensive guillemot research since 1972. Tim now sits on the management committee of the Darwin Correspondence Project and has served as president of the International Society for Behavioural Ecology. In addition to having a monthly column in the Times Higher Education, Birkhead has written for Natural History magazine, The Independent, New Scientist, BBC Wildlife, and Natural History. The Wisdom of Birds, his most recent book, provides an illustrated narrative of how we came to know what we do about birds.
