William Kamkwamba Biography

After finishing the eighth grade at Wimbe Primary School, William Kamkwamba was accepted to Kachokolo Secondary School. William had to leave school a few months into his first year because his family was unable to afford the $80 in annual school fees due to a terrible famine in 2001. He wasn't able to attend school for five years. In order to power his family's house and eliminate the need for kerosene, which only supplied smoky, costly, far-off light after dark, he made the decision to build a windmill. His first 5-meter windmill was constructed using a broken bicycle, a broken tractor fan blade, an old shock absorber, and blue gum trees after he first made a prototype using a radio motor. William was able to charge the phones of his neighbors and power four light bulbs by connecting the windmill to a vehicle battery for storage. Later, to better capture the wind over the trees, the windmill was enlarged to a height of 12 meters. Grey water was pumped for irrigation by a third windmill.
