Thubten Chodron Biography

Venerable Thubten Chodron, who was born in Chicago in 1950, was raised close to Los Angeles. In 1971, she left the University of California, Los Angeles with a B.A. in history. She obtained a teaching certificate after spending one and a half years traveling around Europe, North Africa, and Asia. She then returned to the University of Southern California to pursue post-graduate studies in education while working as a teacher in the Los Angeles City School System. She took a meditation class taught by Lama Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche in 1975, and she later visited their monastery in Nepal, Kopan, to continue learning and practicing the Buddha's teachings. She was ordained as a sramanerika (novice) by Kyabje Ling Rinpoche in 1977, and she was ordained as a bhikshuni (complete) in Taiwan in 1986. For many years, she followed the teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Tsenzhap Serkong Rinpoche Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche and other Tibetan masters while living in India and Nepal and studying and engaging in Tibetan traditional Buddhism. She spent over two years overseeing the spiritual curriculum at the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute in Italy, where she also studied for three years before working as a resident teacher at the Amitabha Buddhist Center in Singapore. She served as a resident instructor at the Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle for eleven years.
