About Thelma Wells
Thelma Wells Biography
Thelma Wells' life has been a brave journey of faith from her moments of singing in a dark closet to the foundation of a nationwide women's mentoring ministry. Her birth certificate merely listed her name as Baby Girl Morris. Since her own cruel mother ordered that she take the child and leave the family, Thelma's mother was a horribly disfigured adolescent without a spouse and nowhere to go. In order to support her infant daughter while working as a maid in the large mansion, the baby's unmarried teenage mother obtained housing in the servants' quarters. The infant eventually moved in with her great-grandparents, who adored her and gave her the name Thelma Louise Smith. Little Thelma was brought to church, where she developed a passion for hymns and praise songs. When Thelma was brought to her grandparents' house on those occasions, her grandmother mistreated her much like she did Thelma's mother. She was kept imprisoned in a stinky, insect-infested closet until right before her grandfather got home, at which point her grandma would take her out, clean her up, and pretend everything was OK. Little Thelma spent her time in the closet singing every hymn and praise song she could recall despite her intense terror. The Lord heard this little girl's pure praise and blessed her with a full life of joy, shielding her from emotions of resentment or bitterness. She would sing herself to sleep in that closet. Thelma was a role model for black women as she grew up, becoming a well-known author and speaker on a global scale as well as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of the first group of ladies to be integrated into the dorms as a student at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas (now the University of North Texas). She obtained her undergraduate degree there, then later, in Evansville, Indiana, at the Masters International School of Divinity, she obtained a master's degree in ministry. She was hired as the institution's first black female professor in 2002.
