Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis is a life empowerment coach, pastor, dancer, poet, psychologist, and motivational speaker. She was selected Emerging Artist of the Year by the North Carolina Arts Council. Her poetry has appeared on BET, PBS, C-SPAN, the Boston Globe, and Black Entertainment Television's Weekend Magazine, among other media outlets. She is the bestselling author of the novels Mangos and Manna and The Birthing of a Lioness, as well as the featured singer on the album Sky: An optimistic Black Girl's Song. Her work is informed by multidisciplinary knowledge of psychology, culture, and spirituality. Dr. Bryant-Davis obtained her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University with a focus on the confluence of gender and racial identity as well as the cultural context of trauma recovery. At the Victims of Violence Program at Harvard Medical Center, she finished her post-doctoral training. She worked as the Senior Staff Psychologist and Coordinator for the Princeton University SHARE Program from 2001 to 2004. She contributed to The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women by Beacon Press. For three years, Dr. Bryant-Davis represented the American Psychological Association at the UN, where she promoted universal human rights and mental health. She has also been named the Society for the Psychological Study of Women's Chairperson for Global and International Issues. Dr. Bryant-Davis has training in acting and dancing from Boston University Theater Institute, The Peabody Institute, The Liberian National Cultural Arts Center, and The Baltimore School for the Arts. She imparts knowledge about how to edify one's emotions and spirituality via poetry, singing, art, and dance. She served as the artistic director of the Blackout Boston Arts Collective from 2000 to 2001. She also mentored poets around the nation and won the Nuyorican Queen of Slam contest. Dr. Bryant-Davis is a skilled playwright as well. In 2003, the Urban Arts Theater Festival in New York included a performance of her piece Upbeat. Dr. Bryant-Davis is a well-known lecturer, performer, speaker, and life coach who uses creative expression, spirituality, psychology, and culture. Throughout the United States, as well as in South America, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, she has spoken at conferences, colleges, churches, community centers, schools, and jails. Oasis Institute International, the leading center for coaching in life empowerment and healing arts, was founded by Dr. Bryant-Davis. The Oasis Institute is made up of multiracial artists and life coaches who offer courses, performances, motivational speeches, and counseling for personal empowerment to both individuals and groups.
