Kristin Neff Biography

Kristin Neff is the founder and board chairman of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, as well as an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself. Neff earned her Ph.D. in moral development from the University of California, Berkeley. She studied self-concept development for two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Denver. She became interested in Buddhism during her last year of graduate school and has been practicing meditation in the Insight Meditation style ever since. She opted to do a study on self-compassion, a fundamental notion in Buddhist psychology that had not previously been empirically explored while conducting her post-doctoral work. She is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, having developed a scale to assess the construct over a decade ago. She has authored several scholarly papers and book chapters on the subject in addition to her book. She has developed an experimentally proven training program called Mindful Self-Compassion with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, which is taught by thousands of instructors across the world. They collaborated on Guilford's The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook and Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals.
