About Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone Biography
Old-school film critics may never mention this athletically built, dark-haired American actor/screenwriter/director of European ancestry in the same breath as, say, Richard Burton or Alec Guinness; however, movie fans around the world have been flocking to see Stallone's films for over 30 years, making Sly one of Hollywood's biggest-ever box office draws. Stallone, who was born on July 6, 1946, in New York's seedy Hells Kitchen, went on to the American College of Switzerland and the University of Miami, where he earned a B.A. Initially, he struggled in tiny roles in films like The Party at Kitty and Stud's (1970), the thriller Klute (1971), and the comedy Bananas (1971). In the well-written juvenile gang picture The Lords of Flatbush, he shared star credit with fellow young actor Henry Winkler, giving him a key professional break (1974). Other film and television parts followed, most of them in uninteresting films, with the exception of a role as a megalomaniac, violent racing driver dubbed Machine Gun Joe Viterbo in Roger Corman's Death Race 2000. (1975). Stallone, however, wanted to be known as a screenwriter as well as an actor and was inspired by Muhammad Ali's 1975 fight with Chuck Wepner in Cleveland to develop a film story about a nothing boxer given a million-to-one chance to contend for the heavyweight title. Rocky (1976), which received ten Academy Award nominations, won the Best Picture Award in 1976 and spawned one of the most commercially successful movie franchises in history, became the stuff of cinematic legends! While Stallone deserves all of the credit, he was well assisted by fellow cast members Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith, and Burt Young, and director John G. Avildsen, who gave the film an emotional, earthy appeal from beginning to end. Stallone had finally arrived on his terms, and studios were lining up to sign the hottest new star in Hollywood.
