Willem Dafoe attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee to study theatre, but he left before receiving his degree to join the avant-garde troupe Theatre X. He traveled to New York City and joined the Performance Group after spending four years traveling with Theatre X in North America and Europe. It was then that he met director Elizabeth LeCompte.
On March 25, 2005, Dafoe wed Italian actress Giada Colagrande. Due to his harsh facial features, he is frequently typecast as an unstable or evil character, most recently the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man movies. He has since gained popularity as a character actor.
