Susan Rice Biography

Ambassador Susan E. Rice is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Research Fellow at the School of International Service at American University. She also contributes to the New York Times as an opinion writer. Before this, Ambassador Rice worked for President Barack Obama as the United States Permanent Representative to the UN and National Security Advisor. Ambassador Rice oversaw the National Security Council Staff, which consisted of over 400 defense, diplomatic, intelligence, and development specialists, from July 1, 2013, until January 20, 2017. She oversaw the formulation and execution of all aspects of the Administration's foreign and national security policy, including all military, diplomatic, intelligence, and homeland security initiatives. She chaired the Cabinet-level National Security Principals Committee. She also gave the President daily briefings on national security. In her capacity as the United States Permanent Representative to the UN and a member of President Obama's Cabinet from 2009 to 2013, a position for which Rice received unanimous Senate confirmation, Rice worked to advance American interests, defend universal values, strengthen global security and prosperity, and encourage respect for human rights.
