At the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, Susan B. Neuman teaches youth and proficiency and serves as chair of the department of Teaching and Learning. She is an expert in the development of early skills; her research and advocacy interests include youth strategy educational programs and early reading assistance for children who live in poverty. She has already served in that capacity for the US Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In her position, Neuman established the Early Reading First program, grew the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, and was responsible for all Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act activities. She worked as an educator for more than 12 years at the University of Michigan, where she oversaw the Ready to Learn Research Center and the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, both of which contained initiatives aimed at improving the prospects of children living in poverty. Giving Our Children a Fighting Chance: Poverty Literacy and the Development of Information Capital, her most recent book, examines how to close the information gap between children from wealthy families and those who live in less fortunate neighborhoods by facilitating greater access to proficiency resources. She has also written widely read books including "Changing the Odds for Children at Risk" and "Educating the Other America."
