Stuart Cowan Biography

Stuart Cowan is the Chief Scientist at the Smart Cities Council, where he uses smart technology to make cities all around the world more livable, functional, and sustainable. He was a founding partner in the company Autopoiesis LLC, which provides ecological design, integrated modeling, feasibility testing, and sustainable financing services for major green development initiatives. Cowan worked for Portland Family of Funds, a cutting-edge sustainable community investment fund, as a transaction manager and founding team member. At Ecotrust, where he previously held the position of Conservation Economy Research Director, he oversaw the creation of the Reliable Prosperity framework for bioregional planning. He is a co-author of the book Ecological Design, which offers a forward-thinking method for fusing ecology with planning, architecture, and product design. Cowan earned his Ph.D. in complex systems with an ecological economics concentration from U.C. Berkeley.
