Harvard University's Laird Bell Professor of History is Sven Beckert. Beckert's work focuses on the history of the United States in the nineteenth century, particularly its economic, social, political, and international facets, emphasizing the history of capitalism. His writings have mainly dealt with the history of financial elites, labor, democracy, and, more recently, the global history of capitalism.

Beckert offers classes on the political economy of contemporary capitalism, labor history, global capitalism, the history of American capitalism, and Gilded Age America. He serves as co-chair of the Weatherhead Initiative on Global History and the Program on the Study of Capitalism, both at Harvard University.
