Stephen N. Oesterle Biography

As Senior Vice President for Medicine and Technology, Oesterle oversees Medtronic's scientific research, the creation of technical initiatives, and the maintenance of strong collaborative partnerships with the world's medical communities. Oesterle, a cardiac catheterization pioneer, founded and managed interventional cardiology programs at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles from 1986 to 1991, Georgetown University in 1991 and 1992, and Stanford University from 1992 to 1998. Oesterle founded the University Medical Center's first endovascular device laboratory while at Stanford. Following that, he established a similar medical device research laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he and his colleagues investigated novel, minimally invasive treatments for coronary disease, valvular illness, rhythm abnormalities, and heart failure. Oesterle was born in LaGrande, Oregon on March 3, 1951. He graduated from Harvard College with honors in 1973 and earned his medical degree from Yale University in 1977. From 1977 to 1980, he completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and from 1981 to 1983, he completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Stanford.
