Chris Beyrer Biography

At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, Chris Beyrer, MD, MPH, holds the Desmond M. Tutu Professorship of Public Health and Human Rights. He teaches epidemiology, international health, nursing, health, behavior, and society. He is the Founding Director of the Center for Public Health and Human Rights as well as the Director of the Johns Hopkins Training Program in HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Science. He serves as the Center for Global Health's Associate Director as well as the Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). He presently participates in the HIV Prevention Trials Network's MSM Working Group. Infectious disease prevention research, HIV among Key Populations, health and human rights, and international collaborative research and training programs are just a few of the areas in which he has extensive experience. He also has expertise in the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. Over 1,400 foreign researchers in the fields of HIV/AIDS prevention, research, and therapy received fellowships from Dr. Beyrer when he served as director of the Johns Hopkins Fogarty AITRP Program. From 1992 to 1996, he was the field director for the Thai PAVE and HIVNET projects, working out of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. He has conducted a considerable study on the epidemiology of HIV in the US, Russia, Kazakhstan, Malawi, Burma, China, India, and other Southeast Asian countries. He is the author of Public Health and Human Rights: Evidence-Based Approaches and the co-editor of the 1998 book War in the Blood: Sex Politics and AIDS in Southeast Asia. In addition to several other organizations, Dr. Beyrer has advised the PEPFAR Program, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, the US NIH Office of AIDS Research, the US Military HIV Research Program, the World Bank, and the Royal Thai Army Medical Corps, and the Thai Red Cross. In 2014, Beyrer won membership in the American National Academy of Medicine.
