Staceyann Chin Biography

Staceyann Chin is a spoken word poet, performance artist, and political activist for LGBT rights. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Pittsburgh Daily, as well as on 60 Minutes. She was also featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where she described her experiences growing up homosexual in Jamaica. Chin was born in Jamaica but currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. She is of Chinese and Afro-Jamaican ancestry. She revealed in 2011 that she was expecting her first child, a girl, in January 2012. She has been open about her in-vitro fertilization pregnancy, and she talked about her experiences as a pregnant, single lesbian in a guest blog for the Huffington Post. She has been a "out poet and political activist" since 1998, while being openly homosexual. Chin has been in Off-Broadway one-woman shows and at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, in addition to acting in and co-writing the Tony-nominated Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She has also taught poetry workshops all around the world. Chin attributes her success to her hardworking grandma and the agony of her mother's absence. Chin's poetry has appeared in various anthologies, including Skyscrapers, Taxis and Tampons, Poetry Slam, Role Call, and Cultural Studies: Critical Methodologies, as well as her debut chapbook, Wildcat Woman, which she currently wears on her back, and Stories Surrounding My Coming. Chin's voice may be heard on CD collections produced by Bar 13-Union Square and Pow Wow. Chin's autobiographical novel, The Other Side of Paradise: A Memoir, was released in 2009.
