Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne and her sister Katherine Kallinis founded Georgetown Cupcake. Katherine and Sophie began baking with their grandma when they were three and four years old, respectively. Their first cake was for their grandfather's birthday, and it was vanilla cake with milk chocolate icing. They learned to bake by following their grandma around and mimicking her in the kitchen.
Katherine and Sophie abandoned their corporate careers to pursue their ambition of founding a bakery together, despite having no formal culinary school experience and only their grandmother's recipes. Georgetown Cupcake, the city's first and only cupcakery, launched on Valentine's Day 2008 in Washington D.C. Their modest store went beyond their greatest dreams, much to their amazement.
