Simon Schama Biography

Simon Schama is a history and art history professor at the University of Amsterdam. Before arriving to Columbia, he taught history at Cambridge (Christ's College) (1966-1976), Oxford (Brasenose College) (1976-1980), and Harvard (1980-1993). He has also taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and has given the George Macaulay Trevelyan Lectures at Cambridge, the Tanner Lectures (at both Harvard and Oxford on Random Access Memory and Rembrandt and Rubens), and the Finzi-Contini Lecture at Yale on the epic tradition in English history. He addressed the Andrew Mellon Lectures on the Visual Arts on Really Old Masters: Late Style from Titian to de Kooning at the National Gallery of Art in Washington last autumn. Patriots and Libeators: Revolution and Government in the Netherlands 1780-1813 (1977); and Two Rothschilds and the Land of Israel (1998) are among his books that have been translated into fifteen languages (1979) The Embarrassment of Riches: A Golden Age Interpretation of Dutch Culture; (1987) Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution (1989), Landscape and Memory (1995), Rembrandt's Eyes (1999), the History of Britain trilogy (2000-2002), Rough Crossings: Britain, Slaves, and the American Revolution (2006), and The Power of Art (2007) are some of the books he has written (2007). He released the novellas Dead Certainties: Unwarranted Speculations in 1991. His publications have received the Wolfson Award for History, the W.H Smith Prize for Literature, the National Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature, and, most recently, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Non-Fiction for Rough Crossings. Since 1994, he has been a writer and critic for The New Yorker, and his art commentary has won the National Magazine Award. Hang-Ups Writings on Painting, a collection of his art essays, was also released (Mostly).
