Shai Reshef, born on September 11, 1955, is a businessman in education. He is the founder and president of the University of the People, a non-profit university that offers certified, reasonably priced online degrees. Reshef graduated from the University of Michigan with an MA in Chinese politics. Reshef was the Kidum Group's Chief Executive Officer and Chairman from 1989 to 2005. The Kidum Group is a test preparation business. Reshef joined Kidum in 1989 when it had just one product and $100,000 in sales. Under his direction, Kidum expanded to become a business with over $25 million yearly sales, over 1,000 staff, and 50,000 students per year. He sold the company to Kaplan, Inc., one of the world's biggest education businesses and a Washington Post division, in 2005. Between 2001 and 2004, Reshef continued to serve as Kidum's chairman while residing in the Netherlands and serving as the chairman of KIT eLearning, a Kidum subsidiary. KIT is the first online university outside of the United States and an eLearning partner of the University of Liverpool. KIT offers IT-related MBA and M.Sc. degrees. Laureate Online Education bought the business in 2004. Reshef has four kids and is married. In California's Pasadena, he resides. Reshef established the University of the People in January 2009; it is a non-profit, American-accredited online academic institution aiming to promote higher education access by providing reasonably priced online university-level coursework. The university had accepted approximately 2500 students from 170 countries as of January 2016.
