About Sergio Pceransky
Sergio Pceransky Biography
Sergio has always been passionate about social and environmental justice. His mother, a Mexican Jew, was forced to move to Spain after his parent's divorce. Divorce and Judaism were illegal there because Franco's regulations gave women minimal protection and privileges. But his mother persisted in waging a protracted and challenging custody battle. Since then, Sergio's mother has been a committed social activist, having founded the country's first shelter for battered women and fought for immigrant rights. Sergio's mother's work had a significant impact on him, and by the time he was 14 years old, he was active in several social justice groups. Sergio helped co-found a student organization for social justice in his second year of high school. Since then, he has continued to work for social and environmental justice. Sergio's background also gave him a range of experiences that shaped his interest in grassroots and community organizing. He spent four months living in Israel as an adolescent using money from a Spanish national peace prize. He gained knowledge of the kibbutz concept of rural community self-organization while living there. The first grassroots uprising in Palestine occurred while Sergio was in Israel, strengthening his resolve to stand out for the rights of oppressed groups. Sergio experienced violence in Israel, but the community-led collective action also enthralled him. Sergio studied development economics at the University of Aachen in Germany. He lost faith when the course instructed pupils on how European corporations might profit by exploiting the developing world. In a network that eventually grew to include 200 campuses, Sergio joined the student union and committed himself to anti-globalization action. Sergio spent four years after graduating building a global network of neighborhood organizations. He regularly traveled, meeting with peasant and indigenous groups while planning conferences, protests, and seminars. He had no fixed address. Through this experience, he developed his ability to deal with complicated systems and interact with people on many levels. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Sergio's work changed when he realized how urgent it was to address social and economic issues. He chose to switch his strategy from organizing protests to making solutions. Because he considered the move away from fossil fuels as a historically significant chance to advance social justice, he concentrated on renewable energy. While serving as the World Wind Energy Institute's Coordinator, Sergio developed his technical knowledge and made numerous beneficial connections in the field of wind energy (WWEI). WWEI is a network of universities and technological hubs to democratize access to education and knowledge on wind energy, which is presently controlled by a small number of large firms that regulate the industry. Sergio has made outstanding relationships in the energy industry due to this expertise. He sat on the board of directors for the European Renewable Energy Federation and the European International Network for Sustainable Energy. He was dissatisfied that WWEI could train leaders in renewable energy but needed more funding to launch community energy initiatives. As a result, Sergio established Yansa to carry out significant community-owned wind farm projects in developing nations. Yansa collaborates with indigenous groups in Mexico and other countries to enable local people to benefit from and control many of these projects.
