McLachlan was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she also studied traditional piano and guitar as a child in addition to voice training. After some preparation at the Nova Scotia School of Design, Nettwerk Records approached her for a performance deal when she was the frontwoman of another wave band called October Game. She first declined because she wanted to focus on her studies, but in late 1987, she decided to accept and moved to Vancouver. She was assigned to Arista for global distribution based on the caliber of her 1988 presentation, Touch. The compilation was republished globally in 1989 and eventually achieved gold certification in Canada. She discovered Solace in 1991, a remarkable collection that demonstrated a notable improvement in songwriting and generated a sizable cult following in the United States. During a 14-month extended stay, McLachlan traveled to Cambodia and Thailand in September 1992 to work on a World Vision story on poverty and child prostitution that Canada funded. After being inspired by her interactions, she retired to an isolated home outside Montreal to work on her following collection. Her most substantial and personal effort to date, Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, was released in late 1993 after spending a half year in a Montreal studio with collaborator/director Pierre Marchand. The album spent 62 weeks on the charts before reaching platinum certification, peaking at number 50 in the U.S. charts towards the end of 1994. Ownership, a song from the album, debuted at number 14 on modern rock radio and had excellent exposure, breaking the Top 100. Adequate, who ended up at position 16, did likewise get a place in that arrangement.
