Robert Gates Biography

Robert "Bob" Gates is a managing partner of Windstreams Properties, LLC, which owns and runs one of the Tehachapi Pass's first commercial wind farms. During his career, Gates has been involved in the financing of wind energy projects totaling more than $7.5 billion. Gates is a wind industry pioneer, having founded the commercial wind energy division of Zond Systems, Inc. (“Zond”) in 1981. By the mid-1990s, Zond had grown to become the world's largest wind energy development business. In addition to site development, Zond pioneered wind turbine technology, including the production of the world's biggest turbines at the time. From 2006 through 2013, Gates was Vice President of Commercial Operations at Clipper Wind Power, which included North American sales. Prior to joining Clipper, Gates worked for GE Energy in the wind energy business, where he was responsible for wind power project development, wind turbine sales, and related government and regulatory, construction, and operations activities. GE became one of the world's most famous wind turbine providers under his sales leadership. Gates has been a pioneer in the worldwide wind business since the early 1980s when he was a principal and senior management of Zond Systems, which developed to become a prominent wind power project developer and wind turbine manufacturer. Through Enron's smart and aggressive acquisition of Zond in 1997, and GE's later acquisition of the company's wind turbine technology in 2002, Gates continued to play a key role in senior management. Since the early 1980s, Gates has been a member of the American Wind Energy Association's board of directors, serving as president in 1999-2000 and again in 2007-2008. Gates has served on the boards of the American Wind Energy Association, the Kern Wind Energy Association, and the California Wind Energy Association, including two years as Chairman of the Board.
