Robert Full Biography

Robert Full obtained his undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1979, his master's degree in 1982, and a doctoral degree in 1984. He worked as a research and teaching postdoctoral fellow at The University of Chicago from 1984-1986, where he conducted research at Harvard University. Full joined the University of California faculty in 1986 as an Assistant Professor of Zoology and was later promoted to Associate Professor of Integrative Biology in 1991 and Full Professor of Integrative Biology in 1995. He currently holds this position. In recognition of his teaching, he received a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1996 and a Goldman Professorship for teaching in 1998. He became a Chancellor's Professor and the director of a new biological visualization center in 1997. Full was elected a Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science in 2011. Full directs the Performance Energetics and Dynamics of Animal Locomotion (PEDAL) laboratory, where he studies many-footed creatures (Poly) using 3D kinematic force platforms and EMG analysis. His research program in comparative physiology and biomechanics is internationally recognized. It has shown that studying a diverse range of animals can lead to the discovery of general principles of locomotion. Full's programmatic theme is Diversity Enables Discovery. His work also involves discovering the function of simple neuromechanical systems and how they can provide new design ideas for controlling animal and human gait.
