Robert Manning is a renowned engineer who has been instrumental in NASA's Mars Exploration Program as the Chief Engineer at the Jet Propulsions Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He is responsible for ensuring the success of current and future Mars missions. Manning was named the Chief Engineer for the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, which is set to land a new rover on Mars in 2010. Before these roles, he led the spacecraft systems engineering team for the Mars Exploration Rover project that landed twin rovers on the surface of Mars in early 2004. Manning also served as the Chief Engineer for the Mars Pathfinder mission in 1997, where he led the entry, descent, and landing team. He has worked at JPL since 1980 and developed computers and fault-tolerant electronic systems for deep space missions before working on Mars missions. Manning has received two NASA medals for his contributions and is in the Aviation Week Magazine Space Laureate Hall of Fame in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. In 2004, SpaceNews magazine named him one of the 100 people who made a difference in civil, commercial, and military space since 1989.
