Jessica Meir Biography

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir is also a marine scientist and physiologist. She is renowned for having been one of the first women to take part in an all-female spacewalk, which she did on October 18, 2019, alongside NASA astronaut Christina Koch. She is now serving as a flight engineer on Expedition 61 and 62 of the International Space Station, which is her maiden spaceflight. Meir worked as an assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School before going on to become an astronaut. This was after completing postdoctoral comparative physiology research at the University of British Columbia. She has investigated the diving biology and behavior of emperor penguins in Antarctica as well as the physiology of bar-headed geese, which can fly across the Himalayas. She is also a marine biologist. She graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, the International Space University awarded her a Master of Science in Space Studies, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography awarded her a Doctorate in Marine Biology. Meir participated in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations 4 (NEEMO 4) crew in September 2002 as an aquanaut. She was chosen by NASA to join Astronaut Group 21 in 2013. Meir was included among the 100 Most Influential People of 2020 by Time magazine.
