Rev. Run Biography

Joseph Simmons, popularly known by his stage name Rev. Run, is a founding member of the influential hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. Besides his music career, Simmons is also a practicing Pentecostal minister. Before forming Run-D.M.C., he was a lead vocalist in the hip-hop group called "The Force." The group's success led to the formation of Run-D.M.C., with Simmons as the lead vocalist, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and the late DJ Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell. In addition to his music career, Simmons also appeared on the MTV reality series "Run's House," which showcased his everyday life with his family. In 2002, he appeared on a special "Rap Stars" edition of "The Weakest Link" and was voted off third. Simmons and his wife Justine partnered with Kool-Aid and a non-profit organization called KaBOOM! to build 24 playgrounds in underserved communities in 2008. The couple also co-authored a book titled "Take Back Your Family: A Challenge to America's Parents." In 2006, Simmons and his wife experienced a personal tragedy when their daughter Victoria died shortly after being born due to omphalocele. This congenital disability caused her organs to grow outside of her body. The Simmonses allowed MTV cameras to document baby Victoria's death for an episode of "Run's House."
