She founded the company in 2005 after serving in the Peace Corps in Mali, where she learned about the shea butter industry and the potential to create a positive social and economic impact for women. Shea Yeleen works directly with women-owned cooperatives in West Africa, empowering them to earn a fair wage and improve their communities. Wright has been recognized for her work as a social entrepreneur and advocate for women's economic empowerment. In 2014, she was named a White House Champion of Change for her work in empowering women and girls. In 2016, she was awarded the Steve Case Social Entrepreneurship Award by the US State Department.
