Since 2019, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris has been the first and current Surgeon General. She’s also an American pediatrician with a Bachelor's degree in integrative biology from the university of California, Berkeley in the year 1996. Earned a medical degree from the University of California, Davis and from the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health, a Master's degree in public health. Formerly the CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and also an advisory council member for Hillary Rodham Clinton's Clinton Foundation's 'Too Small To Fail Campaign.' In 2008, Burke Harris realized that her patients' traumatic experiences were having a negative impact on their present and future health, after she read the book titled 'The Relationship of Adverse Childhood Experiences to Adult Health.' She became a co-founder at the center for Youth Wellness in 2012, which created a trusted clinical model that recognizes the impact of adverse experiences on health and effectively treats toxic stress affecting children. Recognized as a foremost pioneer in the treatment of toxic stress, Paul Tough featured her work in his book, 'How Children Succeed?' Burke Harris was also selected to speak as a distinguished speaker at TedMed in San Francisco in the year 2014. Her talk centered on “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across A Lifetime,” surpassed over 3 million views. By 2018, Burke Harris's first book 'The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity' was published. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, appointed her as the state's first Surgeon General on January 21, 2019; and she was sworn in on February 11, 2019 to the admiration of everybody present.
