Mary Decker is an American former track and field athlete who owns seven American records in her event. She was born on August 4, 1958. Little Mary Decker, a pigtailed, 89-pound fourteen-year-old girl who made her international track debut as a pigtailed, 89-pound fourteen-year-old child, became one of the most famous tracks and field competitors of her period. In 1973, she won the 800 meters at a US-Soviet meet in Minsk, earning her international recognition. Decker held the world records for 1000 meters (2:26.7), 880 yards (2:02.4), and 800 meters (2:01.8) by 1974. Decker established six world marks in 1982, covering distances ranging from a mile to ten thousand meters. The next year, she won both the 1500 and 3000-meter races at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, completing a Decker Double. She won the James E. Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete in the United States in 1982, and she was voted Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine in 1983.
