Khalil Gibran Muhammad Biography

Khalil Gibran Muhammad is an American historian, professor and author specializing in African American history and racial justice. 

Born on Chicago’s South Side in 1972, Muhammad studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.A. in economics. He had planned to become a lawyer before deciding to pivot toward history. This led him to complete his Ph.D. in history at Rutgers University, focusing on African American urban history. He began his academic career at Indiana University. 

His first book, “The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America," won the 2011 John Hope Franklin Publication Prize for best book in American studies.

Muhammad has written for news outlets such as the New York Times and The Nation. He was critical of the ripple effects on policing after the George Floyd riots in 2020.

He is a professor at Harvard University and a leading scholar on systemic racism and criminal justice reform. For his contributions to racial equity, he received the 2023 Gittler Prize from Brandeis University and was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2021.
