Jessica Watkins Biography

NASA has chosen Jessica Watkins to be a member of the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class. Watkins completed two years of training as an astronaut candidate before reporting for duty in August 2017. The Colorado native graduated with a doctorate in geology from the University of California, Los Angeles after receiving a bachelor's degree in geological and environmental sciences from Stanford University (UCLA). Dr. Watkins' graduation work examined the causes and processes of significant landslides on Earth and Mars. She was a member of the science team that worked on NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, and has experience at both the NASA Ames Research Center and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a Mission Specialist for NASA's SpaceX Crew-4 mission to the International Space Station, set to launch in 2022, Watkins is presently tasked with making his first space flight.
