Dr. Tait Shanafelt Biography

Dr. Shanafelt's is a nationally recognized expert in physician wellness and leader in the medical center’s pioneering program focusing on the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). CLL is the most common leukemia in adults and although treatable is currently an incurable illness. He is a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Leukemia Steering Committee and is currently the principal investigator (PI) on two R01 grants from the NCI. He has been the PI on numerous clinical trials testing new treatments for patients with CLL. Shanafelt is also involved in designing and conducting CLL trials for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and is the PI on the Phase 3 North American Intergroup E1912 trial comparing FCR to Ibrutinib-Rituximab based therapy for previously untreated patients with CLL. In addition to his leukemia research Dr. Shanafelt is an international thought leader and researcher in the field of physician well-being and its implications for quality of care. Dr. Shanafelt is the Director of the Stanford WellMD Center and he previously served as the founding director of the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine Program on Physician Well-being a clinical laboratory evaluating personal and organizational factors that contribute to physician satisfaction.
